READ_ME file for weather data collected at Langley Research Center (LaRC) in Hampton, VA at the CAPABLE site. Created by: Travis N. Knepp Contact: travis.n.knepp@nasa.gov FILE REVISION: 09/13/2013 POSTED: 09/13/2013 Other contacts: Margaret Pippin: margaret.r.pippin@nasa.gov Jay Madigan: j.madigan@nasa.gov Data Units for 2010-09-08:Present: Date/Time: UTC Temperature: Celsius Humidity: % Dew Point: Celsius Wind Speed: m/s Wind Direction: Text values (e.g. NW, SE, etc.) Wind Chill: Celsius Heat Index: Celsius THW Index: Celsius THSW Index: Celsius Bar: mb Rain: mm Rain Rate: mm/hr Solar Rad.: W/m^2 Updates: 2013-09-10: Determined that weather station's wind bird is oriented ~ +20 degrees off North. No correction to orientation was made to allow consistency with current data archive. Correction should be applied prior to use of data. 2010-09-08: Weather station moved from behind building 1250 to CAPABLE site. 2011-02-23: Time stamp on data logger set to ignore daylight savings. All files between 07 November 2010 and 22 February 2011 have an incorrect timestamp (UTC - 1hr). True UTC time can be calculated by adding 1hr to timestamp. This inconsistency will be corrected in the posted files at a later time. Affected files will have the characters "_tc" appended to the filename to designate that they have been corrected. Time-stamp change was made at 20:10 UTC. Time stamp change noticable when time jumps from 19:07(UTC-1hr) to 20:10(UTC). 2011-03-04: Weather station failed to collect data since 01-March 2011. Error unknown, software hanging on build graphics sequence, consequently halting all data collection. Software set to not produce graphics, will see if data are now collected. Part of test proceedure involved reset of weather station data logger. 2011-03-07: Time stamp on the files affected by daylight saving change (note from 2011-02-23) corrected. There is a loss of data for the second hour of day (0100 - 0159 UTC on 07 November, 2010) due to this time change. Further, there is a loss of data between 2007 - 2010 UTC on 23 February, 2011. The corrected files were posted online, and the originals removed. There is no difference between the original files and the corrected "_tc.txt" files other than the correction of the time stamp. However, the originals are available upon request. 2011-03-10: Weather station placed back at CAPABLE site. Problem was corruption in software; issue resolved. Instrument currently collecting data. As the data collected today is influenced by moving the monitor from building 1250 to the site this day's file will not be posted; however, it will be available upon request. 2011-09-14: Wind direction data since 11-June 2011 has been unreliable. All wind data from 11-June 2011 are not to be used until instrument is replaced. Data will be written out as -999's until replacement. Until an automated replacement of wind direction data is implemented there may be spurious wind direction values reported (other than -999). A note will be made in this file when instrument is replaced. The rain gauge has not been functional since the instrument's installation. Same as the wind direction data, these data will be replaced with -999's, though not on an automated basis. 2011-10-26: New weather station installed at CAPABLE site. Old stationed removed on 2011-10-25. Data from 2011-10-25 through 2011-10-26 will be removed to eliminate confusion, though these files will be available upon request. User will use these data with understanding that they are uncertain. Instrument is NOT considered operational. Final checks must be performed. 2011-11-18: New weather station is operational. Files updated as specified on 2011-09-14. 2012-06-13: Weather station taken down for maintenance. Rain-collector cup cleaned of debris and bird spikes installed to prevent birds from sitting on rain-collector-cup rim. 2012-07-11: Weather station re-installed at CAPABLE site. 2012-07-20: Files that contain no data (i.e. the station was not operational) were removed from the online archive.
